Private Jacob/Jakob Walch/Walsh of Co. B, 149th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, died (27 October?) 1864 (unverified by The National Cemetery Administration Records Verification Project) and lies buried in Section B, plot 1211, of Marietta National Cemetery (500 Washington Avenue, Marietta, Georgia 30060). His fellow soldier in Co. B., Corporal Jacob Grub, is in the same cemetery, in Section G, plot 6727. Marietta National Cemetery contains 10,132 Union Civil War soldiers, 3,093 of which are unknowns.

Alternatively, I am told he enlisted 31 August 1862 at age 21, and died of disease at Atlanta, Georgia on 28 September 1864.

Please include in your database my German ancestors who came and settled in Syracuse in January, 1883. This family arrived from Antwerp to New York and included eight children, one of whom (Peter) died within the year of arrival. All the others stayed to have clans of their own. Here is the family as recorded from a paid researcher in the village of Reil on the Mosel, in the district of Trier, Germany. Actually, the two oldest children came to NY in the Spring of 1882 and the rest of the family, including the parents, left Antwerp in the following December. Many of their descendants still live in the Syracuse area.

I came across your web site and information today. I wonder if you can help me in my search for more on my ancestors. My father's namesake was Rev. Philip Wieting. He was born in Minden, Montgomery County, NY in 1800 and died in 1969. I have a very old book that is a biography of him. His father was John Christopher Wieting who was born in Brandenburg Germany and immigrated to the United States. In the book, there is an interesting story of how John was subscripted into the army and sent to the U.S. to fight for England (Burgoyne) against the colonies. He was captured on Oct. 17, 1777, at Saratoga. Later became a U.S. citizen.

I know a descendant, also named Philip Wieting,2nd, lived in Syracuse, N.Y., and also in Toledo, Iowa where my father, Philip Wieting the 3rd, was born. Philip the 2nd, my father's uncle, married a woman named Ella and after his death she bequeathed money for an opera house in Toledo. She also left money to the city of Syracuse for an opera house. These opera houses were named Wieting after her husband. I know he was a dentist and later became a banker. These opera houses were on the National Register for historic places. The one in Toledo is still in use today. I would like to fill in some blanks for my mother who is still living at 94. My father died in 1987. I have lots of newspaper articles about the opera house in Toledo. I would like direction on how I could find more information on our ancestors. Thanks.

I have ALL German/Prussian ancestors on my father's side; and on his mother's side, the Wirth's; they always lived on Townsend Street. I think my Engelhardt's did too. Because gr gram Engelhardt married gr grandfather Wirth! I also had Swab's and Schneider's and I believe they also lived on the North side. Prussian records are so hard to find! I am totally stuck on my father's grandparents; on his fathers side: Micha/Michel/Michael/Michaels -and Woldt, which I have found more on! Not sure what our last name 'really' was! But my maiden name is Michaels; but I believe gr grandfather Gustav changed it!

My Great Grandfather, Edward, or Edmond as he was called, was born in Onondaga County NY in 1846 to John Ware, born 1814 (same county?) and Hanna born 1826 also believed to be born in same county. John and family moved to Indiana about 1849 and then John went to California for the Gold rush. He returned about 1856 and took the family there. John Ware ended up starting the town of Paradise California, he being the first person to take a land claim for other than mining in the area. He died in Paradise in 1879.

I cannot "prove" that they were German, but my mother first described my great grandfather as a "red headed German" who spoke with a very heavy German accent. She had thought that he was from Germany, until I started digging and found out otherwise.

Any information about Edward/Edmond's parents and/or siblings would be appreciated.

...We found some interesting material [on an October research trip to Syracuse] about some of my great aunts and uncles. In Assumption Cemetery, I found the grave site of my great aunt Gertrud Staub (born 1842), who married a George Weinheimer. I knew her married name was Weinheimer from a Testamentary letter, dated 1886, in the Surrogate Court in the Onondaga County courthouse. They have a lot of good stuff and well indexed....[In the Geschichte der Deutsche in Syracuse und Onondaga County book at the Onondaga County Public Library] I did find a picture of Heinrich Weinheimer, who was the patriarch of the Weinheimer family into which Gertrud Staub married in 1864/5.

Researching Bernhardt (Bernard) WEISS from Alsace-Lorraine, Germany to Syracuse, NY. Bernard was born around 1827 arrived in USA around 1842 and spent rest of his life in Syracuse. He had 12 children as did most of his kids have large families. Common first names running through many generations are Bernard, Benjamin, John, August, Clara, Louise, Katherine, Joseph, Mary, Anna Maria, Henry, Bertha. Other surnames married into the WEISS family are JOHN, KURY, SCHILLER, KREUTZER, BLOSS, KUHN, AMEND, RAUCH, SCAIBLE, to name a few. Many of the family members are buried at Assumptions Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga Co., New York and Pine Planes Cemetery, Clay, NY. I've worked hard on this family and have a lot of informations. I don't know a lot about Germans in Syracuse but I know a little! My GGrandfather and his brother were in US about 1888. He was in Syracuse a little before turn of century. 1906, was here in Jamesville. George had business in Syracuse, Jamesville and NYC (where he first came to US)...any sound familiar? I know they lived on Oak St., in Syracuse. My Ggrandfather had a greenhouse business...First wife Clara...second wife Katarina Krick Wanhoffer- she brought with her a son Joseph...Ggranfather's brother's name was Joseph. Hope this helps!

I have some information on the Conrad Loos Family, pictures, obit, story of his Civil War record as written by his schoolboy grandson (Carlton L. Hommel, my father), and the genealogy of his ancestors to the 1500's in Germany. I also have a few things about Edward Hommel, his son-in-law. I have his family tree back to the 1700's in Germany.

One of the pictures shows a birthday picnic for Caroline Bolline Woese, taken in about 1895, with many Loos's, Woese's, one Haberle, some Hommel's (including my father, age about three). Another picture shows four generations, with my father (wearing his christening dress), his mother, Elizabeth Katherine Loos Hommel, her mother, Anna Charlotte Woese Loos, and her mother, Caroline Bollino Woese. The last picture shows my father with his brother, Edward Conrad Hommel, with Edward in his christening dress.

We are also related the Bausch Family in Rochester (Bausch & Lomb). There was a Bausch and Hommel Optical Company in Syracuse in the early 1900's, which later became Edward Hommel & Sons, in the State Tower Building.
