Wilhelm Baumgras

wurde am 8. Januar 1829 in Waldmohr, in der Rheinpfalz, geboren, wo er die dortige Schule besuchte und bald darauf (1844) nach Amerika auswanderte, wo er sich in Syracuse niederliess. Er war ein Anstreicher und arbeitete erst als Geselle, bis er sich selbstständig machte - Von 1864-1874 betrieb er das Geschäft gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Friedrich. Er war ein erfolgreicher Geschäftsmann, hoch geachtet und oft mit politischen Ehrenstellen betraut. So war er u. a. von 1854-1865 Supervisor der alten 4. Ward und von 1874-1875 Polizei-Commissär. In 1850 verheirathete er sich mit Fräulein Ophelia P. Gales von hier, aus welcher Ehe 8 Kinder hervorgingen: Julius A., Clarence M., W. Horatio, Lucius C., Julia J., J. Henry, Augusta O. und Georg O. Baumgras. Er starb am 4. Juli 1885 und das von ihm gegründete Geschäft wurde von seinem Sohne, Julius A., weiter geführt, welcher in 1891 die Baumgras Decorating Co. daraus machte. [page 255]

Wilhelm Baumgras was born on January 8, 1829 in Waldmohr, in the Rhine-Palatinate, where he attended the local school and soon after (1844) emigrated to America, where he settled in Syracuse. He was a painter and worked first as a journeyman until he started his own business. From 1864 to 1874 he ran the business together with his brother Friedrich. He was a successful businessman, highly respected and often entrusted with political honors. He was, among other things, Supervisor of the old Fourth Ward, and from 1874 to 1875 he was Police Commissioner. In 1850 he was married to the former Miss Ophelia P. Gales from this city, which marriage produced eight children: Julius A., Clarence M., W. Horatio, Lucius C., Julia J., J. Henry, Augusta O., and Georg O. Baumgras. He died on July 4, 1885 and the business he founded was thereafter led by his son, Julius A., becoming the Baumgras Decorating Company in 1891.
