Jacob Armbruster, born on the 27th of December 1863 in Kniebis, in the Kingdom of Württemberg, attended his local
elementary school and then dedicated himself first to the merchant business. In 1883, hardly 20 years old, he emigrated to
America and after landing on August 25th, came directly to Syracuse. On the 19th of December 1885 he opened a saloon in Gilcher's old one-story timber building at the corner of Butternut and Lodi Streets, and continued the same from the 1st of September 1887 to the 1st of May 1893 in the new Gilcher Building. In the summer of 1893 he built the pretty, three-story Armbruster Building, at the northwest corner of Butternut and Lodi Streets where he then moved his restaurant. In that hall four singing societies make their headquarters. Mr. Armbruster is a popular and successful businessman. On 6 May 1890 he married Ms. Julia Kotz and they have 3 children, Julia, Jakob, and Friedrich.
