Jacob Amos, Jr.

zweiter Sohn des verstorbenen alten Pioniers Jakob Amos, wurde im Dezember 1853 hier geboren, erhielt seine Ausbildung in den hiesigen öffentlichen Schulen und in der Hochschule. Alsdann begann er seine Geschäftslaufbahn, indem er die Geschäftsführung der Mühle seines Vaters in Baldwinsville übernahm. In 1876 verband er sich geschäftlich mit seinem Vater und seinem Bruder Karl L., unter der Firma Jacob Amos & Sons, bis der Vater 1883 starb und die Firma Amos Bros. gennant wurde. Das Geschäft nahm grosse Dimensionen an und seit 1887 führt Herr Amos dasselbe allein unter dem Namen Empire State Mills. Er war immer ein fester Republikaner, diente als Village Trustee in Baldwinsville und wurde in Februar 1892 zum Bürgermeister (Mayor) von Syracuse erwählt. Im Februar 1894 wurde er zum zweiten Mal erwählt. Während seiner Amtszeit wurden die Stadthalle und das N. Y. C. Stationsgebäude errichtet, die Wasserleitung angelegt und andere grossartige städtische Verbesserungen vorgenommen. So wurden u. a. über 10 Meilen Strassenpflaster gelegt, 24 Meilen Abzugskanäle u.s.w. Herr Amos ist Vize-Präsident und Direktor der 3. National-Bank, war einer der Gründer und Direktoren der Commercial Bank, ist Präsident der Paragon Plaster Company, und Präsident der Peoples’ Building and Loan Association, und Direktor von zwei anderen solchen Gesellschaften, Trustee der Syracuse Savings Bank und des St. Joseph’s Hospitals, u.s.w. Im September 1880 verheirathete er sich mit Fräulein Florence E. Wells von Baldwinsville. [page 253]

Jacob Amos, Jr., second son of the deceased old pioneer Jakob Amos, was born here [in Syracuse, New York] in December 1853, and received his training in the local public schools and in the university [or at the high school?]. Then he began his business career, by taking on the management of the mill belonging to his father in Baldwinsville. In 1876 he was connected in business with his father and his brother Karl L., under the company name of Jacob Amos & Sons, until the father died in 1883 and the company Amos Bros. was born. The business assumed large proportions and since 1887 Mr. Amos heads it by himself under the name Empire State Mills. He was always a firm Republican, served as Village Trustee in Baldwinsville and in February 1892 was elected the Mayor of Syracuse. In February 1894 he was for the second time chosen. During his term of office the City Hall and the New York Central Railroad depot were built, the water pipeline was put in and other great urban improvements were made. Thus over 10 miles of pavement were put in, 24 miles of [sewers?] and so forth. Mr. Amos is vice-president and director of the Third Central Bank, was one the founders and directors of the Commercial Bank, is a president of the Paragon Plaster Company, and president of the Peoples' Building and Loan Association, and director of two other societies, Trustee of the Syracuse Savings Bank and of St. Joseph's Hospital, etc. In September 1880 he married Miss Florence E. Wells of Baldwinsville.
